I run a lodge in the Bahamas. I have four new 60hp Yamaha two strokes I'd like to install hours meters on. These are pull start motors....there is NO Battery. The meters have two leads, neg and pos. The negative is easy enough. For the positive....One mechanic said to tap into any yellow wire. Wrong....the only yellow is temp alarm and only goes hot when overheating. I read to splice into the run/kill switch.....nope, doesn't work. I read to hook it up to the tach. Nope....the voltage is varible and will burn the meter up. Another Yamaha mechanic said I would need to install a rectifier. Won't I need a voltage regulator also? You get the idea....I'm wondering if it can be done. Can someone please give me a straight answer. Thanks in advance.

There is no way being the engine has no 12 volt system to drive the hour meter.

Have you looked at a tiny-tach or generic equivalent. You can pick them up online ebay for under $20.00. Self powered. It picks up the pulse from the sparkplug wire to calculate revs. It can also keep track of how long the motor runs. It only records time when the motor actually running as opposed to when the ignition is switched on.

The unit is throw away when the battery is flat but they state it lasts several years.

+1. I would go with a tiny tach, or similar gizmo too. They're super easy to install and give you both hour meter and tachometer features and can be mounted anywhere in the boat from on the motor itself, to a remote helm. Best of all, you can remove it in under 2 min. and install it on another motor in no time.
