hour meter hook-up

I have a 2002 Fisher 170 Hawk 3.0 I/O. I want to put a hour meter in and have it run only when the engine is running. Where is the best place to hook it up to.Thanks I enjoy reading this form and all the good info.

One of two ways come to mind. Easy way is to hook to switched power at the key switch. Next is to get a oil pressure switch and tee off at the engine oil pressure sending unit. This one will give true running time. As it will not put on hours if you forget and leave the key on.
