i like cutting corners. a lot :p

the 1971 johnson 50hp outboard on my boat has a host of problems. the main things i know of are that i need to replace most of the remote control. it needs a new ignition switch, throttle cable, forward/reverse/neutral switch and i think a new choke switch. plus i need to replace a few o the wires that came off its battery connections and went to various places.

besides the wires, each of these things cost $20-$40 at ishopmarine.

now then, i saved hundreds of 2 and 3 position toggle switches from old maintenance hardware that was being scrapped some 15 years ago. they are all in excellent working condition and can be used anywhere a small switch is needed. like here to override a forward/neutral/reverse switch. but i don't know and can't figure out what many of the wires are for.

so, does anybody have a guide for or experience with re-wiring the remote control assembly for a 50hp 1971 Johnson outboard motor?

i don't want to go out and buy all this stuff only to find out that the engine has more serious problems. it also seems hard to find stuff for these older motors. and i can't just use trial and error to find what makes it work since the engine itself might not even work.
