Hi all, just rebuilt my 1979 V6 175hp , new exhaust housing, exhaust megaphone, plate gaskets, water tube to pump and pump. All new,, just ran motor today with ear muffs. Runs sweet, just noticed the warm water outlet coming from exhaust relief hole left hand one, facing prop direction. Is this the correct hot water discharge at idle? Because I never noticed it coming from there before. so got me worried..
The old spacer plate , exhaust housing, and megaphone were rotten before., I replaced all parts. The spacer plate even had big hole. so it looked like water discharge was dumping through hole out the main exhaust through prop before rebuild. I just never seen this discharging from here before,, is this normal for this V6?
Please let me know ASAP,
It has been idle for two runs at 8mins each time. No overheat, signs, just worried water is getting dumped before can do full flow through block and heads etc,.

You will get some water out of both exhaust relief holes. When on plane esp, you should get two strong, full streams-out of both holes. The engine will rely on the thermostats for controlling head temps at idle. Idle head temps should be between 145 and 155 normally. I'd verify this with a laser temp gun which you can rent or borrow. I'd keep the gun handy for your first sea trial and you know everything is ok. When on plane and the thermostat pressure relief valves open, the temps can go down somewhat as increased volumes of cooling water will flood the block passages.

The water diagram for water flow once it leaves the powerhead is somewhat obscure. It is not precisely clear from the factory color diagram. Here are some thoughts that others may wish to chime in with more precise information: Once the water exits the powerhead it can take a couple of paths. Some of the water gets mixed with the exhaust and comes out the prop in the lower unit. Some goes down the back of the exhaust housing and comes out just above the prop where there are a bunch of holes in the midsection casting. Some comes out the exhaust relief ports. You will see all of these if you run the engine on the garden hose.

Thanks comander, I was concerned because of factory diagram showing exits out vents just above prop. I got the miss's to drive when hot and it does shoot out top two holes on mid section. Have done 12hrs on her now and no overheat issues. whew.
