I have a 115hp mercury outboard when I have it running I have hot water coming from the tell-tale hole. Could this be the impellar or the thermostat

Re: Hot water coming from tell-tale hole

If it was the impeller you would not have water coming out the tell tale. You have an overheat condition or a possible cracked block that is allowing hot combustion gases into the cooling system. A stuck thermostat or bypass valve can cause this as well. Now -- all of that depends on how hot the water is. Scalding hot is a bad thing. Luke warm is another as it will alternate between cool and warm as the thermostat cycles. If you can't hold your hand on the engine block for more than a few seconds without getting burned the engine is obviously overheating.

Where is this hole at?? I have a merc 125 saltwater and I noticed a little hole on the lower unit with water coming out of it. The water coming out or the pee hole was luke warm but I did not check the temp of the other hole..

People for some reason or another call the tell-tale a "pee hole". They are one and the same.

the water from the tell-tale on my 175 is very hot to the touch, and 135-140 by thermometer. It gets its water from the back of the thermostats though.

Re: Hot water coming from tell-tale hole

David,

Not familiar with your exact engine, but I can tell you from experience that my '00 200EFI has the tell-tale piped off of the discharge side of the engine thermostats. Since the stats don't open until +/- 143 degrees, the water coming out of the tell-tale is over 135 degrees, which is pretty hot to the touch. Some of the other posts have also hinted at this and I believe that many mercs are piped this way.

Before you convince yourself that there is an overheating problem, trace the pipng of the tell-tale and determine where the source is coming from. If it is coming from the discharge of the thermostats, collect some of the water from the tell-tale and use a thermometer to check the temperature. If it's not more than stat rating, the fact that it's hot to the touch isn't necessarily an indication of a problem.

Hope this helps.
