just bought a 96 searay 175 with matching trailer. We tow about 20 minutes, to the lake, no more than 50, some stop n go. I've noticed that the left tire is hot to the touch by the time we are at the ramp. the rim and hub are cool to the touch. Any ideas what would ause this? is it normal?

Underinflation or misalignment. Most likely underinflation.

JT -- love the "friction" response! Why didn't I think of that. Could that cause the "smoke and flames"?

Bent rim...jack it up and see if the wheel is true.

Could also be a defective tire. If the belts inside are delaminating, the rubbing of the belts will cause the tire to get hot.

How old is the tire? Date of manufacturer?
