After repeated cranking of the engine should the battery terminals be too hot to touch?

Re: Hot Terminals

Starter motors are not meant to be repeatedly cranked. They are a very high output motor that draws an incredible amount of amperage. If you crank it long enough you will burn up the motor, and create some very hot wires and conections. I agree with the previous posts, but the clue that you are giving me says that you are cranking your engine way to much. My question to you is why are you cranking your engine so much? If you cannot start your motor in a couple of 5 second starter turns then you have a problem with the motor, and soon to be starter rebuild. Hope this helps.

One more thing, is the motor turning over slowly? If so, you may be looking at connection, wire, starter and battery problems as one of the potential culprits.

Re: Hot Terminals

What I was doing was checking the starter. I had just repaired it and I was checking to see iff the gear was going up every time I cranked it. I was cranking the engine for about 3 seconds each time. I did it about 10 times.
