I have a 1985 Mercruiser MR-200 witha 4bbl carb. I am having difficulty re-starting the engine once the engine has warmed up. The engine will start right up when cold, but when warm it has difficulty turning over and presents as though the battery is weak. Once the boat is cold it will start right up again. I have confirmed that the iginition timing is correct as I've been told before that if the timing is off it would give similar symptons to a weak battery. Cap, rotor and plug wires are recent. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the engine is turning over slow when warm, after cranking for a bit (be carefull) but feel how warm the connections are at the battery, starter, and Grounds, including battery connections. If any point is getting hot you have a bad connection at that point. Have you load tested the battery?

Re: Hot Start Problem

If all your connections are clean and tight most likely cause of weak starter is a bad starter. If the bushings are worn when warm the parts will expand from the heat and if the bushings are worn it will drag inside. Take it to a rebuilder, it's a lot less expensive then a new one. DO NOT use a automotive starter unless you want to blow up.
