Hot cables and starter when cranking

When I try to start my boat the starter turns the motor over intermittently and the longer I do this the worse it gets and the starter and the cables get hot especially the negative. Thought it was the starter so I replaced it and it still does it. It’s a 1985 Evinrude 70hp. Any help would truly be appreciated.

start with cleaning your connections everywhere between the battery and the starter. if that is not it and your cables are corroded, replace them

Are those battery cables are 35 years old? They could be corroded under the insulation. If cleaning the ends doesn't fix it, new cables could be in your future.

The cables getting hot mean there is high resistance which means bad cables or connections.
