When I run a jumper cable from the possitive of battery to test start, to the red starter wire the cable gets red hot . Why is this?

Re: Hot cable

If you are talking about connecting to the red battery post on the starter, I would suspect either a short in the starter or you are unknowingly touching the starter case with your jumper wire.

Indeed, the only explanation is that your jumper wire is going directly to ground. I'm thinking that could actually cause your battery to explode. At the very least, it will ruin your battery if it has not already.
Good luck,

Re: Hot cable

If you're connecting your jumper wire from the positive pole of your battery to where the starter wire connects to the solenoid, then I'm wondering how long you're running the starter (shouldn't be more than 5 seconds at a time, with time to cool off), or what gauge jumper wire you're using. You're flowing a lot of current from the battery to the starter, so a small gauge wire will get really hot like you describe, especially if you're running the starter too long.
