I have an older hosclaw trailer I've used for my 16' outchita boat. When I went to service the bearings there was no spindle washer behind the castle nut. If I add one the spindle nut threads stick out past the spindle, but I am still able to get a cotter key in the spindle to hold the castle nut. Did these trailers not originally come without a washer? The back of the spindle nut does have a slightly raised shoulder.PXL_20210304_193534664.jpg1974_holsclaw_trailer.jpg

Lots of nostalgia here. Your trailer looks just like my very first boat trailer.

In my 53 years of boat ownership I can only recall one trailer that had a washer under the castle nut. Maybe you don't need one.

The trailer in the picture is one I borrowed off the web but mine looks exactly like it, it's a great pulling trailer. I'd say either way I go it will be good, just figured I'd reach out and see if anyone with more experience knew for sure. Obviously the previous owner pulled it that way for years and years. The boat is in the same era so I'm pretty partial to them and at 37 I still love to keep old things goings!

I have the same question, I have an old but decent shape Holsclaw I'm fixing up to haul to Fla. No washer under castle nut as I'm used to, but appears to have been manufactured that way. You can't get a cotter pin in with a washer under it.
Can anyone verify if they came this way?
I bought new hubs but don't really want to go 1200 miles with a questionable trailer.
Thanks,
