Re: horsepower increase

5 hp will be almost unnoticable. What's the boat rated for?

Re: horsepower increase

It's rated for 40 hp. My thoughts were that it wouldn't make much difference but everyone seems to think it's so great that you can add 5 hp by just removing a restrictor plate.....Den

Re: horsepower increase

like cobra said, 5 hp wont make too much of a difference, if any. If it is true that you can add 5 hp by just removing the restrictor plate without any side effects, do it. But, if you can afford to upgrade to a 40, i think that you will find that much better for suiting your needs.

Re: horsepower increase

The dealer showed me. Remove a bracket to get it out of the way then a couple bolts to remove the carb, remove the restrictor plate and re-assemble. 10 minutes.... Den

Re: horsepower increase

The restrictor plate is the manifold gasket. You will need a 30 hp replacement manifold flange gasket to put back in place. The noticable improvement is probably going to be 2 mph without loss of hole shot.

Re: horsepower increase

its the restrictor plate common on all the Outboards. Is the removal of the restrictor the same procedure on all?

Re: horsepower increase

No. Reducing the horsepower of a common displacement engine is done by various ways: smaller carbs, exhaust tuning, port timing changes, and intake system changes are also very common strategies. Often one changes result in greater low RPM torque on the smaller hp engines though sometimes the changes save some money for the manufacturer.

Re: horsepower increase

You most likely will not notice any improvement by just doing what you describe, but if you do that in conjuction with load distibution, keeping weight to a minimum, doing trim, X dimension, and prop tweaks you will notice an improvement. Good luck....

Re: horsepower increase

See, I have a 8.0 mercury outboard and im seeing if I can take something like a restrictor plate off to get a few more horses out of her.
