I know most folks here love animals and especially dogs. I think this true story is worth sharing. I learned my sons girlfriends mother was viciously attacked by her nephews one year old german shepard. This dog from what she said had already bitten the owner rather severely previously .The dog was being taken outside and when it saw the lady it went for her throat. I saw pictures of the very graphic deep wounds on her arm and leg. Her leg looked like a chainsaw had cut her if this helps the description. The dog was young and came with an expensive pedigree from what I learned. They had the poor animal put down immediately. This is very sad and I have never known anyone that has been attacked like that..I guess we with larger dogs need to be a little more cautious when young kids are around at least.I can only guess this animal had a mental issue and after the first signs of rage the owner just didnt know what to do.

I had a friend in junior high that was attacked by a German Shepherd. My cousin's Grandfather had an all white one that was nothing if not a fantastic guard dog. unfortunately no one could go near him except his grandfather and grandmother.
I know it's not the breeds fault ( I love pits for crying out loud) but it is still hard for me to trust German Shepherds even 30 some years later.

Unfortunately, many owner's aren't smart enough to own any animal. I feel sorry for their goldfish..........

I owned a German Shepard for 13 years. Raised her from a 6 week old pup. Never Ever had any aggression issues out of her. She came from a family atmosphere where both her parents were both raised on the owners farm. I believe aggression is bred in to certain breeds and blood lines of dogs and that is where responsible owners come in to play. If the dog's owner knew the dog to be aggressive to people he should have never had the dog off leash with anyone near the dog other than himself. Owners fault plain and simple. It was probably best that the dog was euthanized before it got hold of someone's child.

I was mauled by a German Shepard when I was 11 yrs. old some 48 yrs ago. Was walking down the road with my 2 brothers and a friend going fishing with poles in hand. The dog broke it's chain to charge out and attack me, knocked me to the ground and grabbed me by the side just above the belt line and proceeded to shake me violently to disembowel me. Luckily the dog had broken off it's fangs chewing on it's metal feed pot. Thankfully the owner was home and came running out and pulled the dog off of me and took me to the hospital to be checked out. There were some cuts and lots of bruising but nothing life threatening.

Fast forward 10 yrs. later, I was 21 and I'll be damned if another German Shepard tried to do the same thing as I was walking down a road in 300 miles away... I instantly remembered what happened when I was 11 and stood my ground, balled up my fists and was ready for a fight. Screamed at the dog and told him "Come on you SOB!!", I was more pissed off than scared this time. The dog stopped about 15 feet away and growled and looked at me, I know he could sense my rage and he turned around and went back into his yard and just barked at me.

I know it's not the breed, but they way they're brought up/raised. I owned a German Shepard since then and he was as sweet as could be because he was raised right. I am an animal lover and like all pets until they show aggression, when they become aggressive I will do my best to avoid them but will stand my ground if they can't be avoided or corner me.

I dont look at the breed as much as I suspect the dog had a brain tumor or something going on .

Have a person living next door to me, he son was over one day with his pit bull. I was walking to the garden to check it out, and harvest some asaparagus when it came after me. Got by it this time, on way back to house came at me again. Ready to defend myself when the son came to get his dog off my property. Was mad because I was ready to stab dog if needed. Well soon his mom arrived home then she attact me. Next time will be a 45 to it's head.
