Horrible squawk when starting 1980 Evinrude 100

Hi guys,

As I'm sure this is a common problem, I get a horrible squawk when I try to start my engine and it misses. Basically I turn the key, it turns over a few times and if it doesn't start it makes the noise. Something must need to be lubricated or something but, does anyone have any ideas of which part in the starting system it is? This is getting embarrassing and my boat has come to be known as the Canadian Goose (it is black and white to begin with and now also honks).

Thanks in advance

If it squawks its probably the bendix of the starter kicking out and then grinding on the flywheel. Try cleaning the starter with brake cleaner but only the gear/bendix area then use graphite powder for lubrication. Dont use oil/WD-40 on it as it will eventually get gooey and stick and cause the same problem.

I would also disassemble the starer and clean and re-lube the upper and lower bearings on the armature. When this grease dries out, it also makes this noise.
