Horrible Screetch Noise on Ignition

I have a 100hp Evinrude. It's been running fine, aside from some idle problems, but when i start the engine it makes a horrible screetch. This usually happens when i'm turning the key and the starter is trying to start it but then it kicks out and all that remains is a horrible loud screetch until i stop turning the key. This also happens when the motor actually does start, but only until I let go of the key. Any ideas of what this is? Does somthing need to be lubed?
Thanks

It would really help to know the model number so we can "see" what motor you have.

It seems like you might be talking about the starter bendix.

Re: Horrible Screetch Noise on Ignition

i have similar problem and now my bendix wont raise to engage the flywheel at all. Ive checked all the electrical connections and tested the voltage at every spot, and everything is getting and sending 12 volts. Tried lubing and cleaning the shaft and the bendix, but still will not move up even after i pull and pry (not tooo hard). It does spin either way on the shaft though. Could the bendix be seized up on the shaft? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks brandon

This problem sounds to me like the gear is stuck. If that is the case (you say the 'bendix' will not come up to engage with the flywheel) you will need to remove the starter.
Clamp the starter in a bench vise. Pry between the gear and starter body while using an impact on the shaft nut. If the only 'impact' you own is a manual 'hammer type' you will require an additional hand. That is, if an impact is required. They can sometimes be really stuck. Lube is needed to prevent this from happening again..............piniongear

Thanks so much, is the starter hard to take out/put back in, or can a person with average knowledge and skills in this area accomplish such a feat.

thanks again

brandon

Re: Horrible Screetch Noise on Ignition

It is a pretty easy job. I prefer to remove the ground cable on the battery as a first step. Next, remove the battery cables on the starter.
You will have to remove the solenoid also. The starter is held on with 3 bolts. You may have to remove the air box and back plate, that depends on your year model. Removing the front starter bolt will tell you if this will be necessary. If the bolt comes out clear of the plate, you are good to go on
The gear can really stick, so expect to exert some considerable force in getting this loose.
I can say all of this because this happened to me a month ago when the gear on my Johnson 90 stuck.

Piniongear,

Thank you sooo much for the input; I was able to knock it loose without removing the starter from the engine. I simply soaked it with WD40, let it sit, then came back with a wrench and pryed underneath it while gently tapping it with a hammer. Slowly but surely it came loose; i then cleaned the shaft really good and lubed it up. Tried it out and shes ready to rock. Thanks again

brandon

noise you here is probably a dry bushing in starter if thats the noise it should still work for a long time
or you could disassemble starter and relube bushings not too much as starters don't like oil
or replace end caps

Good job FSUDTD! Glad you got it freed up w/o having to pull the starter. Keep that shaft greased.

You guys need to start your own threads for your own motor problem/question. When you piggyback on to another thread you muddy up the original poster's scene.

Tempest.... That screeching noise is usually caused by dry busings in the electric starter and/or bendix drive assy.

Sorry Walker, I figured since the original post dated back to May of 2004 that the original poster was done with it; I didnt realize it was such a big deal and will refrain from doing so in the future.

brandon

Brandon, it just makes it much easier to follow the thread and give advice both to you and to the original poster.

Hey Joe, gotta disagree, most times it comes from the kitchen window telling me to take her shoppin' instead of fishin'!!! Usually a $50 greasin' makes it go away!! :) :) :)
