horn problems

So i hooked up my new horn, only two wires. When i press the horn button, all it does is make a popping type noise, sounds like when you pop the top of a mason jar back and fourth.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be the problem. The old one did nothing at all, that is why i am replacing it.

Could I have gotten a bad one or what. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Boatman

Re: horn problems

Hook the horn directly to the battery. If it works start looking for corroded/loose connections or possibly a bad button.

So i can just touch each wire to a terminal on the battery? does it matter which one goes to the pos. or neg. on the battery? It does have a fuse on the switch but the fuse if definitely good.

Re: horn problems

Sweet, I have this same problem. I bought a new horn and was going crazy because the new horn was doing the same thing. I will try connecting it directly to the battery today.

Man I love this forum!!

Re: horn problems

When I replaced mine a dual horn it work but was not as loud as I expected.
Tried on a charged battery and jumped so Hi almost lost my pants.
My orignal horn was added by the dealer I bought the boat from not the factory install.
They use three differnt size wires and all were too small a guage.
rewired completely changing the small guage inline fuse with a large guage inline fuse. Also found both horns can to tuned for your set up with an adjustment screw inside.
Now it so loud that I only use it when I must and warn the wife first.
Both my old horn and the new one were stainless steel on the out side but inside had was metal that will rust and is magnetic. Old hour with some cleaning and WD40
then tuning is almost as good as the new horn. I keep it for a spare, got to have something to fill up the garage.
Good Luck
