Hope I dont sound dumb, model 275 volvo, does the trim have to be down to put in

Bayliner 87 volvo 2.3 aq131a. 275 outdrive. yesterday was my first time taking the boat out. I didnt have the trim all the way down while I trying to go forward. When I did it would jerk real hard and shut off. Well today working on the boat my trim motor went bye bye. I just ordered one off the net. Is that my problem, is that why when i put it gear it jerks b/c my trim wasnt all the way down. I have a red light on my dash by my trim switch. When the foot is all the way down, will that light go off and is it safe to put in gear. Like I said hope I dont sound stupid and this is a good question. If you can give me as much tips for a 2.3 aq131a and 275 outdrive that would help alot. New to boats and what to learn as much as I can. Thanks. <br /><br />Jeff

You have the same motor and out drive that I do, and i am new to boating as well. As long as you dont have it all the way up when you put it into forward gear, you should be ok, at least mine is. That light on the dash of mine, always stays on. however, dont put it into reverse, unless it is all the way down, or it will fly up in the rear. Also, I had a problem with my tilt motor, and it it was just an inline fuse. I replaced the fuse and it works perfect. but the fuse was hard to find, had to order online. hope this helps a little.

I have a 275 also and in shallow water I have run mine with the drive up,the light on the dash stays on unless the drive is allthe way down and locked.<br />and as far as it jerking what is your idle set at?<br />or you could have a bad u-joint in the shaft
