Hooking up Shift Control Cables

I am hooking up an 1986 85 hp Force on my pontoon. The shift cable hooks up and works fine the throttle cable however seems to be about 2 1/2" to long. If I hook it to the stud on the bracket I can't hook it to the throttle connection.

Are you sure the throttle on the engine is all the way against it's stop? Not real familiar with those motors, but something seems out of whack. Is it the same cable as the one you replaced? Same position in the control box?
