So I hooked up a starting/ accessories deep cell battery today and when I went to crank it, it sounded like the battery was dead and had no juice. That's when I saw smoke and the battery was smoking!!! I don't know what is going on??? This motor connects to the battery where there is a nut that you screw on, unlike my last motor where i hooked it up like a car. The thicker posts without threads. The same place you hook your car to the battery.. Should I buy new connectors to hook up to the battery??(like a car) I don't know I thought I got a good deal on this boat but now everything seems to be going wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guy's'

I would start by having the battery load tested to make sure it is good. Should not need the change the cable ends.

Was the battery itself smoking or the cables ??

Might be a direct short frying your battery. Check your main cables and your switch IMO.

the battery itself was smoking. All the plastic around the metal was melted

The only way you can get a battery to do this is to have a direct short across it, such as a big screw driver or wrench. I have also heard of batterys shorting out internally causing the same prob.

Wouldn't that (an external short) make the cables smoke also? My bet is on a bad battery. Assuming this is a relatively small outboard, I would try to start it using the jump configuration on my charger. If that works, then there is not likely a problem apart from the battery. As said, get the battery tested.

My bet would be, if the plastic around the posts was melting , internal cells have melted also rendering the current battery useless.
