I have a 1976 Mercury 850 (85hp) Serial no. 4367785. When checking on a replacement trigger, I am asked which trigger I have, a straight or bent arm.
Can anyone out there tell me why there are two different triggers called out for this engine. Thanks much

You are correct as far as Part no. 73410A1 is for a straight arm trigger for this model. But the problem is when you go to order the part you will see that there is allways a a note that says it is important to check your trigger as to which one you have before ordering. Straight arm or Hooked? The engine I am dealing with has been rebuilt at some point in time, and I believe it has the wrong trigger. Just trying to find out why this engine can use either trigger and why. Thanks

I dont know who you are ordering thru but I refer people to boats.net. The 73410A1 crosses over to the latest # 77000A2 and that a straight arm trigger also, and CDI cross for the 77000A2 is a 134-6452 and its a straight arm too. The boats.net site shows that the 77000A2 fits only 1976-1979 engines and the hooked arm fits 1979-1986 engines

Thanks for the research. Boats.net uses Mercurys part diagrams as do a lot of other parts houses. They all call for part no. 73410A1 (the straight arm trigger) but they also call out a note for this part which reads "See note Grid 4" I haven't been able to find out what this note refers to.

I have checked with other parts houses such as Master Tech Marine. They do not use the Mercury diagram but show the part nos. for the 1976 and 77 85 hp Model 850 trigger as a NOTE also. This note reads, Please Compare These triggers to make sure which one you need. They have photos
Of both triggers to use as comparisons. Hooked arm #134-6454, Straight arm 134-6452. They also show the hooked arm being used on 1980-83 80 hp. Model 800. Thanks again for your research, I'm just trying to nail down, if my 850 can use the hooked arm trigger and what is the differance between the two.

There is a simular post with this same question. I know this is an old post but for anyone else that reads this. Make sure you know if your trigger has a bent arm or a straight arm prior to ordering. The curved arm causes restriction if your original part is straight. You can see the white plastic arm that sticks out from under the flywheel on the left side of engine (left, if you are looking at the back of the engine). Electrical parts are non returnable once installed.
