The motor I recently posted was sold to me as an Evinrude, but come to find it is a Johnson and would like to replace it with the proper hood for the year and decal esign. The 88's I believe have the charcoal color sticker.I know from reading other posts on here that many years will fit, but I wanted to be sure.Does anyone out there have a 1988 that they could photo and post on here?I can either just buy decals from Ebay or try and buy a cover that would be in descent condition that would match the age of my motor and be less work as far as peeling Evinrude stickers off and repainting.thanks

9.9 Decals..jpg
Here is what 1988 decals look like. Your odds of finding a 1988 9.9 Johnson hood in good shape (i.e. no work needed) are going to be limited. I think a can of BRP white paint and some ebay replica decals would be quicker, and cheaper.
But who knows, you may get lucky. BTW 1987 and 1988 are the same, I happen to have one of each.

BRP... Bombardier Recreational Products is the company that owns the Johnson and Evinrude brands.
What I was trying to say is get a can of paint directly from a Johnson / Evinrude dealer, they sell colour match touch up paint in aerosol cans. Make sure you select the correct year range as not all white is the same. One can will be more than enough to do the whole motor let alone just the hood, it seems to last longer than a typical can of paint you would buy at the hardware store.

Here are some images off the web of both 15 hp and 9.9 hp- 1988.

Note the beveled upper edges of the upper cowl. That is one of the keys to tell how old
these engines are from a distance. You'll find a lot of cowl's on Ebay, but most of them
are older with squared off edges. Keep looking, however, and you'll see one of the correct
ones pop up. Look for both Evinrude and Johnson from 1988-1992 (I think), they were the
same except for the color and decals.

All of the decals I've been able to find are close, but not exact copies of the originals. But
they were good enough for me...

The first and third pictures may be the correct cover in terms of the shape but they are not 1988 decals. 1988 are predominately grey, not black. #2 and #4 have the correct 1988 decals.

thanks-Just wondering on the back, is that just a hand hold to lift the motor or does it open up?Looks to be separate part from the main hood.

It's just a handle, it is a separate piece but it is held on with screws from the inside of the hood.
