Honing the cylinders?

I need to hone the cylinders as part of the rebuild on my 72 Johnson 6 HP. My question is what sort of hone do I need? The bore is 1.95 in.

I need to lightly hone them for the new set of pistons and rings. The bore still shows the original cross hatching, and feel smooth to the touch. Some very slight discoloration where the old pistons sat. (the engine sat for over ten years before I got it)

Should I buy a 3 stone hone (brake cylinder hone), or the ball type hone? What grit should I use? Anything special I have to do with the intake and exhaust ports?

I like the dingleberry, ball type hone for what you are doing. Go slow and use plenty of lube, honing oil available at napa or simply ATF. Keep the hone moving to prevent over boring and check for round when done.

Ok, so the ball type is preferred.

What grit should I get? Is there anything special I have to do with the transfer ports?
