honing cylinders

when honing cylinders can regular oil work?
wd40, used motor oil?
ive honed and i still have what looks like a bit of staining, is this acceptable?

its a honda bf90
im just replacing the rings havent got them yet but i tried honing a bit

Honing is removing metal. After the hone job, what do the cylinders measure?

havent even measured, just wanted to try the hone
gonna do the rebuild somtime later, i do know that after honing the walls have to be within spec.

I used kerosene on the last hone

Agree with the kerosene thing also varsol will work well. You need to know what your cylinders measure before you begin and then what they are when you are finished. As stated above you are removing material from the walls as you hone.

Thing is Kero will wash out the grit, and lube just enough to let the hone do its work. Oil will create a boundary layer, and just spin, acts like a, well, as oil should..seperates the moving parts. And the more the better (to flush it). Ever time I do Harley jugs, I get someone to squirt some in, while I keep the hone moving back and forth. Want a nice crosshatch so the rings have something to grind against to seat
