Does anyone have the instructions/schematics for attaching a tachometer to a BF40a tiller engine. I asked this question months ago, but this board has really grown and a whole new set of talent has arrived.
Currently I am using an aftermarket tach that grabs its signal from the plug wire.
I purchased the Honda adapter to plug into the electrical harness but it didn't come with instructions. My old helpful Honda mechanic left and the new guy here is being a jerk and wants me to pay him to install it and he's not willing to give advice for free. (Guys like this are what give dealers a bad name)
The Seloc manual doesn't give very good instructions either.

Does anyone have instructions on how to install a tach??? Its been sitting collecting dust on my shelf for about 6 months now!

Thanks,
Nav.

I am not familiar with this harness apaptor as I simply have'nt been asked to install a tach on a tiller. Whould suspect the wireing to be the same . BLACK/YELLOW 12 volts key on, GRAY, tach lead, BLACKor BLACK/GREEN ,ground. Will try and get you somemore info tommorrow.Apart # for this adaptor might be helpful.

B.T.W. you will need a honda tach as this engine fires differently than their 2s and 4s which are compatable with two stroke tachs.

Nav, Hondon,
There are I believe three gray wires on the ECM but I dont think any of those are for tach signal. I have also never seen a tach on a tiller. But I know it is possible. Heck the other day I had a tiller with a key mounted on a bench seat so I know someone makes these special harnesses. Now the problem is I dont know who makes the harness. If the harness is HONDA then as Hondon said it will be the gray lead on the harness that provides tach signal. What I am a afraid of is they sold you an "A" harness which is made to connect to a Honda remote control which will make it difficult if not impossible to connect it at the motor end. hondon you know these tillers dont have the big green connector like the remotes do so I dont know where he might be able to pick up the signal. Do you think he could get signal from the connectors inside the ECM cover???
Just a thought.

Re: Hondon, Hitman and other Honda wrenches

Thanks guys,

I'm on vacation with the family right now, but work made me take the laptop...so here I am.

I got the harness from Honda Marines web site and unless the data is wrong, its the correct part.

Hondon, The Tach I want to install is a tach designed for 4 stroke outboards. Info supplied with the tach listed the Honda 40 as a 6 pole setting. Is this correct?

A tach on a Tiller? well yes, but I've also built a console on the rear seat of the boat that contains the tach, Nav Lights, a Key switch for the starter (This was pretty fun to rig) andan assortment of switch/fuse/power combinations for my fishfinder, vhf, gps and several other "gagets". I think I have the most "High Tech" aluminum Jon boat in the area.

I'll check out your advice on the wires when I get home.

Thanks a bunch,
Nav

Had to back into this sight in an usual fashion this evening ,so I hope I get to you. I suspect you have the simple y connector #32197 zhb 003. If so remove the plastic meshed cover on the port/left side of your engine and plug that y into either gray bullet connector.Extend that wire to the gray wire ,whatever tach you have, then if you have an elec start you just run BLACK/YELLOW wire if HONDA tach, or purple wire if not to battery pos .BLACK to batt ground If rope start you will have to use the DC plug on the side of your and incorporte a battery.

In my panic ,trying to access this sight to resond I did'nt read your previous post as diligently as I should have .The key switch make the connections all the more easy and it sounds like you have this key switch figured out and with info already given should be reading RPMs in no time.
