Re: honda problems

Some people on this planet think Honda never produces a bad anything. I can't imagine a Honda product not working properly.

Re: honda problems

Idle speed is very critical on these triples. Spec is 950 plus or minus 50 but these things really prefer the high end of that spec and it is measured in neutral after a healthy warm up with a good shop tach. Also ,since this problem won't occur in the test tank, look at how this engine is hanging on your boat. Any chance that the upper exhaust ports are getting submerged and not allowing this thing to breathe?

Re: honda problems

thanks hondon,

I have a tacho attached to the spark plug lead on this 40 honda. When it was stalling the idle in gear would read 840 rpm. After a while the motor would have a cough and the rpm would drop down to 660-700 rpm. It was when this happened it would stall, if it didn't stall the rpm would return to normal level

i took it out today and adjusted the idle speed up. If I take it for a run and slow down and idle in gear the rpm starts at about 920-950 and after a while it drops down to about 840- 860. when the motor coughs or misses the rpm only
drops to about 780. it doesn't stall at this rpm.
In neutral therefore the tacho reads about 980-1000 rpm. It occasionly gets up to 1020-1040.

is this too high and will it cause damage and why does this motor have a cough/ miss occasionly. I have been told that it is normal for hondas to have this cough or miss and as long as the base idle is higher enough it won't stall.

Thanks for your advice.

Kellaig

Did you forget fuel in the gas tank. These engines are more reliable than an airplane engine.

Try to balance the Carbs - you will need a carb balancing tool for this.
