Guys, does anyone have a source for rattle can paint that yields a pretty good match with the original color used on 1998-2000 and later mid size engines (e.g. 35-90hp)? I have one I'd like to fix up a little, but don't want to get mixed up in a big base coat/clear coat project. TIA!

I had the same problem trying to match the paint on my Evinrude. Seems like white and blue are the hardest I took the cover and went to a automotive paint store and looked at their chip books and found a rattle can that was Very close (I. mean close!) .They had a ton of chips to look at; you might get lucky

How did your paint job turn out?

Remember the type paint (enamel, lacquer, acrylic) or the brand name?

Yes; it was a Duplicolor paint. The paint was for a early model Mercury car. There are tons of colors from them; a lot are NLA.. As far as prep: wet sanded bad spots with 360W/D; the rest with 400;. used a lot of water. Taped off with artist masking tape (.Makes a smooth line) Took almost the whole can. They showed me how apply a clear coat over it all..Take the can; stand back about 2'; and once you start;don't stop.. It makes a a fog that falls and blends in. I am definitely a painter by trade; but to me it looks good. Also it was in direct sun for 2 day after drying overnight. Good luck!!

Awesome, Thank You!

If I decide to go this route, clear was something I was considering after installing a new set of decals. Thought being it might seals the edges and provide some extra protection from the sun.

Now to try and figure out what color....

My buddy owns a business up in Palm Harbor repainting outboards and repairing boats. He is my "paint guy"

I don't necessarily want to be "that guy" or use a paint shop. I get a great kick out of doing ALL my own work (cars, trucks, tractors, DP motor homes, lawn equipment, boats, bikes, snowmobiles, homes, even airplanes for a few years!). It's a rare day when I pay to get anything done (roofing being the exception!). Knowledge gained and end product that turns out well makes the mistakes and "re-do's" worth it to me in the end. The fact it's a hobby will never be lost here....

I was just looking for a short cut to something that matched well and wasn't a major project. We'll get it on our own if we need to..... -Al

racerone,
Thanks, I guess I must have missed it in the several shops I've been in. Didn't know they offered it. You've used this paint?

Thats me too! Be sitting down when you price those decals; some of them are pricey! Remember somebody talking about having "rub marks" on one of his decals.. He said he took it to a shop that does pinstriping and they repaired it for 20 bucks.
