Honda Oil Filter Confusion

I recently purchased both a BF50A (in a jet configuration) and a BF20D.

The BF50A was new in 2007 - serial number BAZS-3704XXX.

The BF20D is brand new (2008) - serial number BAMJ-1405XXX.

I made a trip to my local Honda Outboard dealer and he sold me several oil filters for my BF50A with the following part number:

15400-PFB-007 (black in color)

According to some Internet sources I see that the 15400-PFB-007 is the oil filter for

BF50 AW, AX, AY, A1, A2, A3, A4

I suspect that my engine is not one of those models, as the suffixes suggest older varieties of my engine.

I think that I am supposed to use the following part number:

15400-PFB-014 (red in color?)

From what I have read, I should be able to interchangeably use the -014 filter in both my BF50A and my BF20D.

Can you tell me what the difference is between the two filters? Is there any harm in using the "wrong" filter? If so, I will take them back to my dealer and give him a tongue lashing.

Thanks in advance,

Jake

Re: Honda Oil Filter Confusion

This is about the dumbest thing Honda parts has ever done and I have found no one to justifiy it.You will find that that black 15400 pfb 007 filter when installed only engages a thread or 2 on the adaptor. That,s not enough for me.Use 15400 pfb 014 for both applications and you will do well.

Re: Honda Oil Filter Confusion

I solved this mystery by purchasing a lifetime supply of Wix filters in the Carquest rebrand. I bought a bunch of Carquest part number 85365.

I figure that Wix filters must be about as good as you would need, as a lot of folks have a lot of good to say about them.

I discovered that Amsoil sells Wix filters - that's a good sign in my book - and my local Carquest guy had the same Wix manufactured part with the only exception that the filter is labeled Carquest rather than Wix.

Plus, the upside is that I can return the wrong filters to my local Honda dealer and get my money back, rather than exchange them for the correct Honda part number. No sense rewarding incompetence.

BTW, here's a link to the Wix branded filter (Wix part number 51365):
