I recently purchased a 96 Kenner Pro Skiff with a 96 Honda 4 stroke 50HP. I am new to boating but have a couple of questions if anyone can help.

1 My transom saver pushed up too far onto the water intake covers and have actually pushed the water instake covers in so that they are no longer flush. Any issues to change these covers?

2. The remote throttle is very stiff. The previous owner says it has always been that way. Anybody else have this problem?

3. The tilt / trim on the motor will not go up but will go down. The tilt trim on the throttle, however, does move the motor up and down. Any suggestions or is this a "take to a dealer" concern?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Honda Newbie

1. Screens on the water intake?

2. Sometimes the routing of the cable can make it stiff. Otherwise make sure that the insulation on the cable is not cracked anywhere allowing water to enter and cause corrosion. Lube the ends of the cables and the linkages at the motor, I like using Fluid Film.

3. Most likely need to replace the "pan switch" on the motor. The fact that it works at the control box indicates that the motor and relay are fine. Check the wiring from the motor mounted switch. Disconnect it and see if there is continuity. There are probably 3 wires; one is the common that runs to the center of the switch, 1 for the raise, and 1 for the lower.

Thanks for the advice,

Regarding question #1, yes it is the screens on outside that have gotten messed up. The rubber tips on my transom saver slid over the water intake during transport. The screens are not completely busted but they are significantly warped from the way they used to look.

Re: Honda Newbie

The screen is designed to keep debris from getting sucked up into your water pump impeller/intake area and clogging or damaging the system. If there are no big gaps or holes in the screens then it will likely be fine. You just don't want a stick or all of the weeds that are growing on the bottom to get pulled up inside the cooling system. It's easier to get the debris off of the outside of the motor from the screens at the intake than it is to get the crap cleaned out of your cooling system. Just make sure there are no gaps in the screen, if there are spots where it is susceptible to violation then replace them.
