Honda maintenance question

I own a 1997 Honda 25HP. I have winterized it for storage each year, performed regular oil & filter changes, and regularly changed the bottom bracket oil.

The motor has run absolutely flawlessly, and has been used relatively little over the last 3 years. I have never had any dealer service performed(ie tune-up, etc.) Is this something I should consider doing??

Any comments are appreciated.

Re: Honda maintenance question

First of all welcome aboard jeffman. You didn't mention impeller being replaced and it sounds like its doing alot of sitting, so that would be one to have done. I would follow the maintance schedule, right now mine is ready for a valve adjustment, think the book says every 3 years. If your the least bit handy these aren't too difficult.

Re: Honda maintenance question

I've asked the same questions to a couple of mechanics; some of the responses are:

- water pump impeller, definitely - most people suggest doing this every two years.

- if you're running in salt water, replacing the thermostat after 7-8 years is a good idea; it's also a nice easy project

- cleaning the carb(s) is probably a good idea; it seems like Hondas of this vintage start to need this (mine is a 1998 and it recently needed this service; better to do it in the off season or when you don't need the boat)

- timing belt - I just heard yesterday that the recommended maintenance interval on this is 400 hours.

I'd be interested in anything else people have to add to this! The guy I spoke with yesterday said they see commercial Honda users with 7000 or 8000 hours on their engines, which would be about a century at my current usage rate! (Of course, as we all know, disuse tends to age an engine more than use.)
