Honda Lower unit / Mercury

Hi all....major newbie here....

Bought a pontoon to try to reconnect with the family after years of work-a-holism...

I can fix almost anything broken, so I got a fixer....

It has a '94 Honda BF75AT, 75hp, with a bad lower unit. Evidently a seal went out, filled it with water, and it seized up. Pulled the LU, and ran the motor (yes, with water)....all good there.

I read elsewhere that a Mercury LU will bolt right in.....Right? or Wrong?

I have found a couple of rebuilt '94 Merc LU's for $600ish...

Also found an ebay one that came off a unit with a blown motor, that had just been reworked for $300!

If not, I will be trying to rebuild my LU...rather buy a pre-loved one....

the ebay one is ending in (2) days .....Any help? I am hoping the Mercury route will do it!

Thanks in advance!

The gearcase and some of the internals are the same but the driveshaft splines will not match and you would be shifting backwards even if they did.Hondas gearcases have been really pretty cheap over the years.

Thanks for the reply...I will keep a lookout, but I guess I will crack mine open, and see what it will take to rebuild it....shouldn't be too hard, as long as the parts are available!

Ok...now I have read again, on another forum, that the Mercury lower unit will work on mid-90's Hondas...this is sooo confusing....I found lots of "cheap" Merc units...not any "inexpensive" Honda ones... *sigh*
