Is there a clean way of replacing the oil in the lower unit, I've tried refilling using syringe and plastic tube but it's messy and I still waste a lot of oil. I've looked here in the UK for some kind of screw in connector but have not been succesful.
Any help would gratefully recieved as I'm just getting the motor ready for this years first fishing trip.

Manxman,

Do you have a Honda dealer near you? They should offer a fill kit. It is a small pump that goes into a quart bottle.

If not, how about Mercury? Most Honda L/U's are made by Mercury.

Don't forget to change the fill/drain plug seals.

Dosnt sound like you are doing it right, Remove both top and bottom drain and vent plugs, when drained you leave the top plug out and fill it from the bottom untill it comes out the top. Ten when full you put the top plug back in first and then the bottom one, this causes somewhat of a vacume while you get the bottom plug back in. Dont worry if you let a little oil get by while you are getting the bottom plug in, it wont hurt.

A pump kit is the only way to go.I have yet to see a Honda pump kit.Be careful when buying this though. I have a '99 Honda 90 hp and the Mercury pump kit I bought uses a different thread. Also, the metal on the bullet is very soft! Do not over tighten either the pump kit or the drain screws - you will strip it! I speak from experience! Lost a drain screw on an old outboard while running once and ended up with a $180 to change the gearcase. I've been paranoid ever since and this led to over-tightenting the drain screw on the Honda. The dealer was the one that ended up doing irreversible damge when the motor was in for a tune-up. Even when they inserted a heli-coil to accomodate a new screw - this time a MErcury screw - we've never made a good seal since. It's been a headache.

Re: Honda L/U oil change

Thanks for all the responses, I've been to Honda (pump & generator) dealer today but he hadn't heard of a pump kit but will investigate for me.
LubeDude there is only one vent screw and one drain screw the other one screw along side the vent is stamped wash. I was losing oil when using the syringe and plastic tube because I didn't have a tube that was a tight fit in the drain hole, If I'm unsuccessful getting pump kit I'll have to get a tighter fitting tube to go in the drain hole.
Over here the local Honda marine dealer ain't much cop if Honda UK heard some of the tricks his "mechanics" got up to I don't think they would be very pleased, I personnally have no faith in his company.
I will be going over to England this year and will find a dealler over there to do business with.
Thanks once again I will publicize this great web site over here.

Manxman,

Got a Mercury or Mariner dealer nearby? How about Johnson/Evinrude.

John/Rude dealers would definately have the kit. The fitting MAY work on a Honda. Even if it's not exactly right, you won't ruin anything, the fitting is plastic.

The Quicksilver pump is a good piece of kit - I made my own fitting for the Honda. It doesn't need to thread in, even - just make something with plastic tubing and a collar with an O-ring to press tightly against the leg while filling. A son/ daughter/ wife/ friend/ handy pet could pump the oil in while you hold the hose and get ready with the drain plug if you don't want to use all three arms at once.

I also have a "suction pump" which would do the same thing, but I find it messier, and the pump does't seal well inside, possibly because it is a cheapie.
