This is a Honda 8hp that I may be getting with a sailboat. It shifts into forward just fine but when shifting into reverse the gears grind or if you shift fast it will clunk. Is this a problem or normal.

You have to snap them in and out of gear or you will tear up the clutch face and the gear face. The grinding noise you hear is probably the two surfaces grinding in to each other before they engage. The faster you shift, the better off you are.

You might want to check the idle speed. If the idle is too high, the gears will grind. Also check to see that the shift lever is adjusted properly. If the throtle lever is maladjusted, giving the engine fuel before the shift is complete, the engine will grind the gears also.<br />Nick
