Honda Cylinder Head Gasket

Need advice concerning re-usability of the chrome head gasket in this Honda 25hp outboard. Shop manual says its reusable, but its partially covered in black, rubbery gunk. If I may reuse it, what sort of solvent or cleaning method should I use on the gasket and mating surfaces?<br />Engine is 10 yrs freshwater old; I just cleaned out two handfuls of potato chips in the waterpassages! Thanks

Likely that gasket has been recycled once already,The glass&emory paper method posted above& a new gasket would be wise.good luck
