I have a 1999 Honda 90 4 stroke out board with about 650 hours on it. Last weekend I took it out all day, ran about 30miles all day. Everything ran fine, nothing unusual. While flushing the engine at home it just completely shut off, and would not restart. No hesitation or stuttering before it shut off. I tried to restart several times (just turns over and over) put it away for the night to look at this week.

Looked at things the week and doing same thing, just turns over and over ... not firing up. I figured it was either a fuel or spark problem so I went ahead and changed, fuel filter, spark plugs, and fuel water separator....still nothing.

The motor definitely seems to be getting fuel ( I run 90% of the time ethanol free).... so maybe its a spark issue? I haven't been able to check each spark plug to make sure they are getting a spark yet.

checked fuses: good
checked kill switch: hooked up

tested spark plugs and nothing at the plug. A friend helped out that is handy with electrical stuff and we ran through some test in the service manual. It seems to be the CDI, low current from the CDI to the coils .......

Honda dealer wants $120 to do a diagnostic ..... is there anything else I can do to diagnose? can I get the Software and use a laptop? what about Honda salvage CDI?

Other than running the diagonostics there isn't anything else to do. If a CD tests bad, its bad. If a CD test good its probably good. IE Sometimes a bad one will test good, but a bad test always means bad.

Thanks!

Can anyone suggest a reliable used parts dealer for Hondas?

Hi, not sure what engine you have is it carb or injection? if it is injection, like mine ,then maybe the main relay is bad. when you turn the key to the on position you should get i signal to the hp fuel pump and you should be able to hear it cycle for a second or two when you first turn the key. good luck
