Aloha from hawaii everyone :). I am new to the forum and fairly new to boating. I just bought a honda bf9.9a 1995 I think, 4stroke. The water pump or impeller needs to be replaced because no water is coming out the pisser no smoke tho so I am hoping its just my impeller. I took the proper steps to remove the lower unit loosed the shifting linkage and the four bolts on the lower unit. I am trying to wiggle the lower unit off the leg but she will not budge. Am I missing a step? Do I need to drain the oil? I have the motor on a dolly stand, does it need to be om something sturdier? Thank you for reading any advice is much appreciated.

Re: honda bf9.9a 1995ish lower unit stuck

I don't know that model specifically, but if it is like the circa 1991 BF8A: You have to remove the clevis pin that attaches the upper end of the shift rod fitting to the shift lever, and then unscrew the fitting at the top of the shift rod from the rod itself. It is a bear to do, as it is very hard to reach in and twist that fitting. If you don't, the fitting diameter is too large to fit through the access hole. You can leave it on, support the motor on a stand, and lower the LU enough to change the impeller while not pulling it entirely free. Just support the leg on a piece of wood or something.

If you mean it is seized to the upper unit, and won't budge at all, I don't know - PB Blaster? Bang it with a rubber mallet gently?

I had a stuck 1959 Evinrude. I turned the motor upside down, shot some pb blaster down the drive shaft. I let it sit for about 6hrs, then tried to pull it, and it broke free no problem. Good luck!
