Our 8hp 4-stroke Honda outboard has been having some shifting problems and I was wondering if the almighty collective here would have some answers and possible solutions for us.

My wife has complained in the past that she would shift the motor into a gear and it would not engage. I thought (typical male thinking here) that she was doing something wrong and obviously not shifting it all the way into gear, as when someone else would usually take it over for her and shift the lever, it would work fine.

So, yesterday I was backing it out of the slip and shifted it from reverse into neutral, and it continued in reverse!! I played around with it and jammed it into foreward and with a great heave and splash, the motor shifted into foreward gear.

The motor does not use remote controls. The shifting is done by a lever that is on the motor.

So, what ccould possibly be wrong with my outboard and how do I fix it?
