Changed out my lower unit lube today and engine oil and motor puttered right along. When I pulled it out of the tank I noticed water draining from two holes in the lower case on the same side as the gear case drain and level plugs - what do these do. I looked at the service manual description of the cooling system and it makes no mention of these. Sorry to ask such newby questions, but it just seemed odd.

They allow the puddled up water that is in your gearcase in various cavities to drain and prevent a catastrophe in a freeze situation.

Re: Honda BF75 - gear case ports

The water isn't actually coming from your gear chase its coming for the area surrounding it. It's the casing that is draining not the area in the case (where the gears and oil are). It's good to clean these hole out occasionally, especially before winter.

If you take your lower unit off it would make more sense. I'm not suggesting doing that, but you'll see where the water is coming from.
