honda BF5A carb flooding

Just overhauled the carb on this 4 cycle, 5 hp honda outboard. It starts, seems to run well, it has fuel dribbling out of the float bowl vent when at high rpm then the rpm's suddenly drop and it stalls. Stalling can be prevented by quickly opening the throttle, but eventually, it dies. The float seems to be set right (10 mm), and there doesn't seem to be a hole in the float. It also continues to run with the idle screw completely turned in. Anyone know what could cause this?
I'm going to buy a new float valve and float because I'm out of ideas.

Re: honda BF5A carb flooding

Well, in case anyone cares, which does not seem to be the case, I replaced the float valve and got the same result. The float is backordered. Although the symptoms would suggest that the float had a hole in it, since the engine runs without overflowing the float chamber until after running for several minutes, it looks like the float is solid plastic. No fuel seems to leak out of it. Blowing into the fuel inlet fitting with the float valve closed seems to seal, but it's hard to tell.
The boat was not used for a couple of weeks while I was out of town. Maybe some of the elastomer valve nose stuck to the seat. It's so small I can't see it, and I can't see how to clean it without damaging the soft brass.
People are usually very generous with their help on these forums. I'm surprised my post got 36 views and no replies.
If I can ever return the favor, just let me know.

Since you have already cleaned the carb and replaced the inlet needle it is time to look at a completly new carb. The inlet needle seat is not servicable and if you have been trying to clean it with any abrasive,Bad news!!

Check the float level. I'm not sure about honda but with Johnson, suzuki, and yami you would flip the carb upside down and level and the float should be parallel to the gasket surface. If not, bend the tab while not putting pressure on the needle valve...this will damage it.
