I broke the skag off of my new Honda BF50. Is it possible to weld this back on? Also, I have seen a device called a Skag Protector, are these worth installing?

i used a skeggard on a 50hp evinrude that i
broke the skeg on.
they work great, at about $100.00
make sure that you have at least 2-3 inches of skeg left so there is some metal to drill and bolt through.

good luck!

Re: Honda BF50 broken skag

The skag on my Tohatso M50D was broken completely off (1/8"-1/4" left). I had a local guy weld on a new one and it looks great. I guess he does a lot of this. But, I would crack open the oil fill plug just so pressure doesn't build up from the heat of welding.

I have heard others say they don't recommend welding on a new skag because of the heat. I know nothing about boats or motors. I just know I had a new skag welded on mine and it hasn't fallen off yet. Good luck.

Re: Honda BF50 broken skag

I've got a honda 9.9 HP (early '90s) with a broken skeg as well. Went to the "skeggard" website and looks as if the smallest they make is for a 35 HP. Anyone know if this will fit smaller engines? Can it be "trimmed down"?

P.S. Also missing a chunk of the anti-cativation plate on one side - anything similar to skeggard to fix this?

Re: Honda BF50 broken skag

I got a new skeg from this site last year & it was welded on just fine to a 350 engine with a 260 Mercrruiser I/O. It works just fine as about 6 to 8 inches were scraped off the bottom of this unit when I bought it. Low fluid in the hydraulics was the cause, I guess? I filled it up, it was real low, & it stays up now. BUTT, how do I get the paint to stick to the new skeg? I paint it & it's pretty much bare when I get home. Can you help? Thanks.

Check into river runner. I think they make smaller ones. A friend had one on a 25 HP. Did not help when he hit and eskar reef at full tilt though. I still think they server a purpose. He just hit too hard.

Thanks for the info., PW. Tried to google "river runner" and couldn't find anything that related to outboard skegs. Any more info., i.e. name of manufacturer, alternative spellings, etc?

Help is much appreciated.
