Honda bf50 '99 compatibility

I've got a 1999 Honda bf50a outboard with the lower unit retaining nut corrosion problem. I'm thinking of JB weld it shut with a new nut since the threads are gone. Not sure if it's safe or how long it'll last. I might have to bite the bullet and get a new lower unit but don't want to waste my money if it's going to be d?j?vu few years down the road.
Is the newer lower unit with an updated prop lock (2002-current?) fit the '99 head ?
I've searched and could not find any relating info on the subject.
