Hi guys, I'm currently looking at a four stroke outboard to power my 12 foot aluminum boat. I've narrowed it down to these three models. What are the differences betwen the the BF8 and the BF9.9? They look identical and have the same displacement. The BF5 looks to be of the older Honda design, whereas the BF8 and BF9.9 look more "rounded"; are the BF8 and BF9.9 as tough as the older design BF5? Any opinions on these outboards would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know the approximate top speed of these three models? Thanks gents.

Re: Honda BF5, BF8, or BF9.9

I would avoid the 5hp, based purely on hp. I use a new Merc 4hp on my 12' aluminum, and it just isn't enough to plane well or go fast enough. I used to have a 9.9, that really pushed it along at a good clip (15mph+?).
But I traded that for a 15hp long shaft for my other boat.

I don't think Honda ever made a bad motor.

Go with the 8 or 9.9 if you know you can handle the weight. The five was made to cater to the sailboat kicker industry and that single cylinder wobble can be a little unnerving in a small allum. boat. The difference between the 8 and 9.9 is carb and head.Honda still offers the 8 classic.

If budget allows, get the most HP.

My neighbor has the 9.9. Nice & quiet!
