Hi all,

I recently got a 2005 Honda BF40 tiller, but I don't have a key for the ignition. Are the keys for the Honda outboards a generic Honda key? Or do I need to take this to a lock smith as I don't really want to replace the ignition cylinder.

Thanks,
Drew

There are only 6 different keys that fit every one of those type of switches. Most Honda dealers carry all 6 in stock and you just try each one till you find one that works.

Thanks for the response,

I called around to my local Honda dealer today and he said I should have some number combination on the side of the key cylinder; he gave me examples of what it should be but I don't have any numbers like what he said. The only numbers on the outside are ZV5-2 on the back where the wires come out. And 4IM stamped on the side of the plastic enclosure.

I asked him if I need to pull the metallic key cylinder out of the plastic housing to find any numbers and he said no. But even if that was the case, Im not sure how to pull it out without the key. Theres is a small slot under the face of the key cylinder but i dont have anything rigid and small enough to get in there, if that is how.

Do you know where id just be able to buy the entire key set? or any other ideas?

Thanks again

Guess there is a few more then 6, but still not to many. If you cant find any numbers it may just be a generic Honda key, the engines did not come with tiller installed and those tiller kits stayed relatively the same for years so it might have an older tiller kit on it from a year they used the generic keys.

thanks, by chance would you have a part number for the generic key? Ill order the generic key when I find it as well as the W02 key, since ZV5-2 is stamped on the back that atleast makes some since
