Honda BF25 4-stroke cuts off when shifting

I'm new to this engine (2002 model used, very low hours) and haven't done any work on it besides changing the plugs. It idles great and runs well at all speeds, however when shifting it usually cuts out. I can keep it running by choking it a little, then shifting.

Any advice on how to fix this?

I previously had a Johnson 25 and did most fixes myself. Is this something I can tinker with or should I take it to the shop to have them work on it?

Thanks for any potential help!

sounds like carbs need cleaning if you have to hold choke to run

Check the idle speed. These triples like to idle at the high end of the spec,so around 1000,and depending on the load you carry ,that spec can be very critical. If you find that when you pull the plugs and they come out looking a little black,in all likelyhood you are lugging this engine and either need to bump up the idle or reprop.

New plugs w/ little fouling, prop is in good shape, (only 10 hours on it), don't need to choke it to run, just to shift, runs well at all speeds, just a shifting issue...any other thoughts?
