Hard to start and dies quickly..

Just purchased a used 2012 15 HP Honda outboard, the seller stated it only had about 20 hours of uses. When purchased they made me aware that the temperature Sensor was broken and everything else was fine. (Temp sensor is on order and should be here in a few days)

While waiting I tried running the motor to see if anything else needed attention, no water was circulation out the pee hole. Purchased and replaced the water impeller (Old impeller was missing all the fins). When I try to start the motor it's hard to start and will only stay on a couple of seconds, could this be because the temp sensor is disconnected or do I have other issues?

Model # BALJ-1600802

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Impeller missing fins and temp sender broken.
My first thought is the motor over heated and there is a motor issue. Don't see a temp sendor keeping any motor from running. Folks lie all the time. Honest folks get taken all the time

Do a compression test

Most outboard motors never get a chance to wear out.-----They are destroyed by folks who just do not know about operation and maintenance of them.-----A compression test is your first step.-----Throttle open when doing this test.

Is it possible to know if that motor was run in salt or fresh water for the last 10 years of use ? If there's no temp sensor a shot impeller check if still counts with an installed thermostat or not. ? Did you bought that motor cheap ?

I need to get a different adapter for my compression tester as the spark plug hole is very deep/narrow and won't fit. I'll find the correct fitting and post the readings.

Per the seller the motor was only used for less than 20 hours in fresh water only, they said the temp sensor was broken while changing the spark plugs, this seems feasible as the sensor is directly in the way of changing plugs.

I should have the new sensor installed this week, also hope to have the compression test completed. Once both of these issues have been completed, I'll report back.

Thanks..

Is that motor EFI? If yes, then a temp sensor could definitely affect how and if it runs. The ECU will use the temperature to adjust the fueling, and if the sensor isn't reading then the ECU might think the temperature is really off from the actual temperature and either flood the motor or not give it enough fuel to run.

Update:

Have now installed the temp sensor and also replaced the throttle cable (Old cable was frozen) everything is back together and look rights.

The motor starts easy and sound great, but will only stay running for about 30 seconds or so, during this time the green light is on. to me it seems light the chock stays on and this is why its dying. How can I check the chock, and what should I look for next?

Thanks/Jerry

Update # 2:
My new compression set came today, it had the correct size fitting for this motor, both cylinders came in at 110 Lbs. each.

Still starts easy, but only runs for 30/40 seconds & dies, the green light in front stays on the entire time.

The water bin I'm using to run the engine in looks like it has gas or oil in it, should this happen with a four stroke?

The oil looks clean and smell right, doesn't appear to be burnt.

What should I test next?

Thanks/Jerry

Not an OB guy, but seeing a bit of fuel on the water would not be surprising with a motor not running right. If its not burning all the fuel, as in flooding

Look in to the carb, see if the fuel pump is working fuel pump

Thanks for all the help and suggestion on this post, after replacing all the cooling related parts (and a few others) I did get the motor running.

Thanks.

Do you think it was overheating and shutting itself off (overheat protection)?

It was severely overheated, so I don't think there was any "Protection" system shutting it off. The impeller housing was partially melted, even found parts of the impeller stuck in the thermostat. The thermostat housing was deformed and even the throttle cable was melted "Stuck". But once everything was replaced I did (with the help from this site) get it running.

Thanks/Jerry
