laying on it's side when I stood upright leaked oil of I think out of exhaust hole is this common or do I have to tear apart

just bought it it's a 1984 model

Welcome to iboats. :welcome:

Four stroke outboards must be laid down ONLY as specified in the Owner's Manual or oil will leak into the cylinders. Sounds like yours was laid down wrong.

Remove the plugs and turn it through until no oil remains. Then try starting it (with cleaned or new plugs and refilled oil). If you are lucky it will clean itself out.

There's a sticker near the tilt arm, it should show you what side to lay it on. I think the throttle handle needs to be on the ground.

On the Honda BF8, the throttle handle does have to be down - sort of counterintuitive at first, as you'd think it ought to be up to protect it.

Just to add to what was already said; Once you start it, it might smoke until the oil is burned off, bit its unlikely you hurt anything.
