I have bought a new Honda BF 50..
In my manual there is a table which has hours in when I must make a check (first 20 hours, than 50 hours than avery 100 hours or 6 month)..

I ask if there is an option to read engine hours?
Is there a option to connect "hour counter" to the engine?

Before this I have Suzuki DF 50 .. The suzuki shows the engine hours on gauge (throotle) when you switch on the main switch..

Thank you

Peter

Hour meters are availble here on iBoats or any store that sells marine accessories. Mine is rectangular (about 2 inches long and 1.5 inches high. Mounts with two screws. Round versions the same size as fuel and voltmeters are also available. It is merely a digital clock mechanism that connects to switched +12V and ground. When the ignition key is switched on the counter begins recording "ON-TIME" displayed in hours and tenths of hours. Easy to install and there are no wires to run to the engine. Everything can be connected at the console.

Peter,
Normally when you release the key from the start position, it returns to the on position. Your hourmeter will run as long as your ignition switch is in the on position.
JS

I understand what you are asking. As long as the switch is in the ON position the hour meter will run whether or not the engine is running. I'm not aware of any hour meters (inexpensive versions) that work only with the engine running. There would need to be tachometer input to determine that and the cost would be much higher.

Yes Upinsmoke.. thats'it..

Ok.. Here is the schema of my instalation..

If you see on the upper left corner there is tachometer and trim meter.. and also there are 3 wires free.. I would like to know if any of this wire I can use for my "hour meter"..
My hour meter work with 10-80V DC..

Re: Honda BF 50 (how to check hours or mount the counter)

It appears that the upper wire (Bl)is ground so that wire will work for the NEG side of the hour meter. The second (center) wire (R/W) appears to be +12V feed to the instrument lamp for other instruments. That wire would only be active when the instrument panel lights are switched on so it would not be a valid connection. The third wire (BL/Y) is apparently the +12V source feeding the instrument panel light switch. The schematic does not show its source very well but it does appear to originate at the ignition switch. If that wire has +12V with the ignition switch in the RUN position and 0V in the OFF position, it can be used for the POS feed to the hour meter. If it has 12V all the time, it cannot be used as the meter would run constantly. The Tachometer however does have a switched 12V feed. You can use that wire but I can't tell from this schematic which wire that is. The back of the tachometer is usually marked +12V, GND, Sense (or pulse), and Lamp.
