Honda B100L runs rough with cover on

I bought this honda new in 1984. SN B100L-1501709. When I remove the cover, it runs great at all speeds. No mechanical binding that I can find. When I put the cover back on, it slows down and runs rough. I undo the latch in back and lift the cover an inch or two and it smothes right out.

Is it possible that there is an air/fuel mixture problem in the carb, that is compounded by putting the cover back on ?

I'm scratching my head over this one.

Any ideas out there?

My guess would exhaust problem, maybe a bad gasket or worse.

Thanks for the response. I'm sure you are right as exhaust gasses are starving the carb of the proper air mixture. I may just bore a hole in the engine cover and port fresh air in near the carb....... Fixing the leak may be more $$ than it's worth.

Thanks again,
