recently started having an issue with my 1998 90hp honda. at something above idle rpms (around 1200 rpm), the engine will stumble or hesitate for a second while in gear, losing rpm's and then recovers. (almost like it skips a beat). the problem is very intermittent but seems to be occuring more often as time goes on. problem does not occur at low idle or higher speed up to full throttle. not sure if the root cause in in the powerhead or the lower unit. any ideas or suggestions?

Re: honda 90 stumbling

Robertross,

Sounds a bit like the needle valve on one of the carburator floats is sticking. That, or possibly a piece of dirt or varnish in one of the low speed ports on the carbs. As the throttle advances the low speed port is suplemented by the high speed port. Your problem probably occurs at this point. When low idling, the port can handle to gas flow, but as speed increases something may be restricting the flow. Once the high speed port kicks in you indicated it smooths back out again. I'd recommend pulling the carbs and giving them a once over with carb cleaner. Make sure you directly spray it through all the ports. Since it recovers, it probably isn't that serious...just annoying.

Nav

How long since you changed the spark plugs...
