Honda 90 Life Expectancy???

I am very interested in purchasing a boat with twin 1999 Honda 90 outboards. The boat seems to be in good running condition. My concern is that the engines have 1800 hours on them. I know proper care has the biggest impact on engine life, but need to know if these used engines are "used up" or still have life ahead. If you have a high hour Honda outboard I would love to hear about it.

Thanks in Advance.

2 stroke or 4 stroke? follow the rules, check maintainace records, compression, spark, lower unit. etc.

Those engines may be near the end of their useful life or they may be just well broken in. Check compression and oil pressure at operating temp against the Manual. Those are the main places to find symptoms of wear. Check the feet for water.

Ignition systems don't wear out; they work or they break.

Carbs have the advantage that they don't have a computer to break, but they require maintenance. They don't wear out either.

If they have had good care there is no reason I can see that they won't last 4 or 5,000 hours.

Re: Honda 90 Life Expectancy???

I think that 4-stroke outboard engines can last almost forever if they are maintenanced properly. I'think the best solution with lowest risk would be to take the boat with engines on trailer to the nearest official Honda service, because it's the only place where you can find the correct answer about the engines condition...
