Does anyone have a Honda 90hp four stroke on a 17 ft Whaler Montauk? Is it too heavy? Is a 70hp enough?

Re: Honda 90 4-stroke on a Montauk?

Hi, Zmurgy.

The carbed Honda 90 is pretty heavy for a Montauk at around 370lb. The EFI 90 is too heavy at over 500lb.

BW issued a press release stating the transom weight limit for Classic Montauks at 410lb.

I have a Suzuki DF70 EFI 4 stroke on my Montauk and believe it is a marriage made in heaven. I can cruise at 30 and WOT is 38.5 (GPS).

The Suzuki 4 strokes (and Johnson from 40hp up) are truly excellent engines. I think the 90 and 115 Suzis are too heavy at around 420 lb.

If you want more details on my set-up let us know.

Good luck. :)

Re: Honda 90 4-stroke on a Montauk?

ZMurgy, I just happen to have a boston whaler specification guide.Let's see ...,the montauk weighs 950 lbs.Max hp rating is 100,max weight recommendation(persons ,motor and gear)is 1,415 lbs.,swamped capacity is 2000 lbs.recommended engine shaft lenghth is 20",actual lenghth is 16'7" W/ 6'2" beam.
power trim and tilt model 70 hp evin/john 2 stroke weighs roughly 250Lbs.don't know what the 100 hp 2 strokes weigh but I'll bet it's the better part of 325lbs.So, figure what the 90 hp 4 stroke honda weighs and go with this as a guideline.
I'm guessing you'll be OK.

Zmurgy

As JB stated the max engine weight on a Montauk is 410#.
Don't know how you will be using your boat but JB is happy with the 70 Suzzi and I am happy with the Merc 50 4 stroke on mine.

You might want to check out www.continuouswave.com/whaler
Read through the posts in the performance section, lots of good info there.

Thanks JB,

As I'm now in "the hunt" for another Montauk "fixer upper" I was seriously considering one of the 4-stroke Rude's at I-boats.

You just nailed it for me. I didn't realize that you got that kind of speed.

Re: Honda 90 4-stroke on a Montauk?

Thanks guys for all the info. I was just wondering how much weight you can push at those speeds? I am seriously thinking of getting one of those Evinrude 70's on special for $2500. I just hope it will be enough. The most weight i think i will ever carry is around 800lbs. We also catch some pretty rough seas. So having some extra power to outrun waves is a big plus. I have an 85hp Johnson now,and it is almost on its last leg. I dont know how much less power a 70hp has than that old 85hp. Thanks for all the great advise.

Zmurgy,I'm guessing that the 70 hp evinrude or johnson will push your rig decently. My 15 dauntless weighs 850 lbs and it runs 45+ w/70hp rude.13x19 prop.I'm guessing that you could run a 15" pitch at around 30+ rigged with a 2 stroke 70 and keeping transom weight to a minimum would make it handle nicely offshore.
